Game Day | Chicago Sky
Chicago Switching Up Rosters + Breaking Records
What a week it has been for the Chicago Sky! While Azurá Stevens finished her season due to injury and Diamond DeShields left the bubble for personal reasons, Chicago had to mix the roster up to make sure they’re ready for the upcoming games.
Following the Chicago-Indiana trade, Stephanie Mavunga has been looking to find her balance on the new team. She hasn’t played many minutes yet, but I’m sure she will be an important part of Chicago’s strategy on both the offensive and defensive end.
The Sky has also signed a short-term contract with Alisia Jenkins, who was released by the Indiana Fever recently. We have only seen her play 3 minutes in 2 games total, so it’s hard to comment on her game as of yet. I’m not sure what plan Coach Wade has for her, but we should find out in the next couple of days, when the contract expires.
Apart from the roster changes, we also had some major celebratory moments happening in the bubble for the team.
Courtney Vandersloot became the Magellan Player of the Month, and also broke the WNBA All-Time Single Game Assist Record, by scoring 18 in the game against Indiana Fever on August 31st. Not only did she reach that milestone, but additionally, her spouse – Allie Quigley – was actually the player who made the historical bucket, engraving the Vanderquigs’ names in WNBA books for good. I mean, how full circle is that?!
Speaking of Allie Quigley, the amazing 3-point shooter has become the Sky’s All-Time Franchise Leading Scorer by breaking 3002 points. She has since surpassed that number and given the fruitful season she’s had already, we can only expect more from her – especially with assists coming from Vandersloot.
As if it wasn’t enough success for this dynamically determined team, they officially clinched the 2020 WNBA Playoffs, so we will definitely be getting more of them in action! I’m super excited to see what they can show us in the next couple of weeks, despite the injuries and adversities they have been facing.
