SKY ACQUIRE STEPHANIE WATTS; RIGHTS TO LEONIE FIEBICH FROM LOS ANGELES SPARKS

CHICAGO (May 9, 2021) – The Chicago Sky announced today the acquisition of former North Carolina Tar Heel Stephanie Watts, the 10th pick of the 2021 WNBA Draft, and the rights to German national player Leonie Fiebich from the Los Angeles Sparks in exchange for Gabby Williams.

“We are pleased to announce that we have traded Gabby for Stephanie Watts and the rights to Leonie Fiebich,” said Sky General Manager and Head Coach James Wade. “We thank Gabby for all that she has done in a Sky uniform and we wish her well going forward. We are excited about the possibilities that come with having Stephanie with us and what she will bring to our team. Her activity and skill set have already been displayed with LA early on.”

Watts finished her North Carolina career during the 2020-21 campaign as the team seasonal leader in assists, steals and blocks. She spent her previous season at Southern California (2019-20) and completed her post-baccalaureate program during the 2020-21 school year at UNC. The Wesley Chapel, N.C., native is second in program history in career three-pointers (275).

Fiebich, a native of Landsberg, Germany, was selected by the Sparks with the 22nd overall pick of the 2020 WNBA Draft. She began her professional basketball career at the age of 16 for Germany’s TS Jahn Munich. She later moved to Bundesliga club TSV 1880 Wasserburg for the 2018-19 season, where she was named as the league’s top newcomer following a 10-point, eight-rebounds per game campaign.
At the international level, Fiebich won the silver medal for the 2016 FIBA U-16 Women’s European Championship and the gold medal at the FIBA U-18 European Championship in 2018. “Leonie is a young German prospect that we feel has a long career ahead of her. She’s a 6’4 guard with limitless potential,” said Wade.

Williams departs Chicago following three seasons with the Sky after being selected fourth overall in the 2018 WNBA Draft. She will remain on the suspended list for the 2021 season as she honors her French National Team commitments.
