Sparks Re-Sign Te’a Cooper

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 11, 2020) – The Los Angeles Sparks are excited to announce the re-signing of guard Te’a Cooper.

In the 2020 WNBA bubble at IMG Academy, Cooper appeared in 20 regular season games and averaged 7.0 points and 2.0 assists in 17.3 minutes per game, good for Top 10 among rookies in points and assists. She shot 45.1% from the field and 34.3% on 3-pointers. On the defensive end, Cooper quickly earned a reputation for her stifling pressure defense.

“Te’a Cooper joined the Sparks last year under difficult circumstances and took advantage of her opportunity,” General Manager/Head Coach Derek Fisher said. “We’re excited about the role Te’a can play for us on both the offensive and defensive end and her potential to be an impact player in this league.”

Off the court, Cooper has emerged as an influential voice in women’s sports, finishing the 2020 season ranked No. 1 in the WNBA in social media engagement, per Opendorse, with 4.11 million impressions earned and a follower growth rate of 616.38% throughout the season. She was also one of five WNBA players who recently signed a partnership with Jumpman, Nike’s Jordan Brand.

“I’m beyond thrilled and grateful to continue my career in Los Angeles,” Cooper said. This organization believed in me last year and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity. I can’t wait to get back on the court and help the Sparks compete for a championship. I’m excited to continue learning and growing alongside Coach Fisher and my teammates.”

Cooper finished her collegiate career at Baylor University and was drafted 18th overall in the 2020 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury before being waived on May 26, 2020. The Sparks signed her on June 28, 2020.
