Top 10 Sneakerhead List (2020) #6: Breanna Stewart

Why Breanna?

Breanna has offered her platform for awareness, activism, and acknowledgement for the lack of privilege that many of her fellow teammates, league, and overall, community, faces continuously. She remains abreast of necessary dialogue and the heat on her feet, courtesy of Nike. Shoutout to her for being an ally, amidst it all.

I’ve been trying to put some thoughts into words. It’s hard to reconcile the pride I feel playing for Team USA with the shame I feel over the systemic racism that has contributed to the privileges I have – and the oppression of Black people in America. George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Ahmaud Arbery. My heart goes out to their families and to all the families of Black lives lost that we have not heard about. We must protect Black People. Black Lives Matter. I am an ally. I want to be an accomplice and I am working to be a better one every day.

It’s on all of us to be actively anti-racist and to use whatever we have, to help those doing the work. I pledge to do my best to be of service to Black liberation by doing whatever I can to elevate the work and voices of the movement’s leaders.

-Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm)
